Where May Ultra-fast Rotating Neutron Stars Be Hidden?

چکیده
The existence of ultra-fast rotating neutron stars (spin period P ∼< 1 ms) is expected on the basis of current models for the secular evolution of interacting binaries, though they have not been detected yet. Their formation depends on the quantity of matter accreted by the neutron star which, in turn, is limited by the mechanism of mass ejection from the binary. An efficient mass ejection can avoid the formation of ultra-fast pulsars or their accretion induced collapse to a black hole. We propose that significant reductions of the mass-transfer rate may cause the switch-on of a radio pulsar phase, whose radiation pressure may be capable of ejecting out of the system most of the matter transferred by the companion. This can prevent, for long orbital periods and if a sufficiently fast spin has been reached, any further accretion, even if the original transfer rate is restored, thus limiting the minimum spin period attainable by the neutron star. We show that close systems (orbital periods Porb ∼ 1 hr) are the only possible hosts for ultra-fast spinning neutron stars. This could explain why ultra-fast radio pulsars have not been detected so far, as the detection of pulsars with very short spin periods in close systems is hampered, in current radio surveys, by strong Doppler modulation and computational limitations. Eos of Dense Matter and Fast Rotation of Neutron Stars
Neutron stars with their very strong gravity can be very fast rotators. Theoretical studies show that they could rotate at sub-millisecond periods, i.e., at frequency f = 1/period >1000 Hz. The first millisecond pulsar B1937+21, rotating at f = 641 Hz, remained the most rapid one during 24 years after its detection. In January 2006, discovery of a more rapid pulsar J1748-2446ad rotating at f = ...

γ Cassiopeia (γ Cas), is known to be a binary system consisting of a Be-type star and a low-mass (M ∼ 1M ) companion of unknown nature orbiting in the Be-disc plane. Here, we apply the quasi-spherical accretion theory on to a compact magnetized star and show that if the low-mass companion of γ Cas is a fast spinning neutron star, the key observational signatures of γ Cas are remarkably well rep...
متن کاملGravity Waves from Rotating Neutron Stars and Evaluation of Fast Chirp Transform Techniques
X-ray observations suggest that neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) are rotating with frequencies from 300 600 Hz. These spin rates are significantly less than the break-up rates for essentially all realistic neutron star equations of state, suggesting that some process may limit the spin frequencies of accreting neutron stars to this range. If the accretion induced spin up torque i...

We investigated the reported distances of Galactic black hole (BH) and neutron star low–mass X–ray binaries (LMXBs). Comparing the distances derived for the neutron stars Cyg X–2 and XTE J2123–058 using the observed Eddington limited photospheric radius expansion bursts with the distances derived using the observed radius and effective temperature of the companion star we find that the latter a...
متن کاملConstraining properties of rapidly rotating neutron stars using data from heavy-ion collisions
Properties, structure, and thermal evolution of neutron stars are determined by the equation of state of stellar matter. Recent data on isospin-diffusion and isoscaling in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies as well as the size of neutron skin in Pb have constrained considerably the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy and, in turn, the equation of state of neutron-rich n...
